The Turkish Passport: Visa-Free Travel, Dual Citizenship and the Residence Permit Alternative

A passport is a tool, so I always ask what a family needs it for. A Turkish passport is strong for some goals and simply wrong for others. Below is what it gives on the official lists, what it does not give, and when I would suggest a Turkish residence permit instead.

What changes on the day you become a citizen

The President’s decision takes effect from its date. You can then obtain a Turkish identity card and passport; BRIDGES mentions that the passport is issued for ten years. Turkish citizens also have obligations, and for men that includes military service, which I discuss in the family guide.

Visa-free travel: examples from the official list

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye publishes the visa rules for holders of ordinary Turkish passports. A few examples as of October 2026:

DestinationRule for ordinary passport holders
JapanVisa-free for 90 days
South KoreaVisa-free for up to 90 days; K-ETA registration required before travel
Hong KongVisa-free for up to 90 days, passport valid for at least 6 months
SingaporeVisa-free; 30 days on first entry, extendable up to 90 days on approval
ThailandVisa-free for 30 days for tourism since 15 September 2026
GeorgiaVisa-free for up to one year; travel insurance mandatory since 1 January 2026
Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, UruguayVisa-free for up to 90 days
Qatar, Kazakhstan, UkraineVisa-free for 90 days in any 180
MalaysiaFree 90-day tourist visa on entry
United States, Schengen areaVisa required

Rules change, so check the Ministry’s page before every trip. I deliberately do not give a total count of visa-free countries: BRIDGES makes the same choice, because a number without a date misleads.

Europe: the Schengen visa cascade

A Turkish passport does not give visa-free entry to the Schengen area. BRIDGES explains the change of 15 July 2025: under a European Commission decision, Turkish citizens who apply in Türkiye and have used two visas correctly within three years can receive a one-year multiple-entry visa, then a three-year and a five-year one. Each consulate still decides, and the 90 days in 180 rule still applies.

One small detail from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: many Schengen states do not accept visa applications with a passport issued more than ten years ago.

The United States: the E-2 treaty

BRIDGES highlights that Türkiye is on the list of countries with an E-2 investor treaty with the United States. E-2 lets the owner of a US business live and work there with the family. The visa itself is granted by the United States in a separate procedure, so the Turkish passport opens the door to apply, nothing more.

Dual citizenship

Turkish law does not ask investors to give up their current citizenship. The Citizenship Law itself defines multiple citizenship (Article 3) and provides for it to be noted in the civil records (Article 44), and BRIDGES states plainly that dual citizenship is allowed. The other side of the question is your current country: some states restrict or do not recognise a second citizenship, and that is decided by their law, not Türkiye’s.

BRIDGES also makes a point about banks that I agree with: a second passport widens the list of banks willing to consider you, but it removes no checks, and every nationality is disclosed.

If citizenship is not the right fit: a residence permit through property

Some families do not need a passport at all. They need a lawful, renewable status for a few years. For them the Turkish residence permit (ikamet) through property may be the better tool.

What the official rules say

  • A property owner can receive a short-term residence permit under Law No. 6458. Invest in Türkiye notes that foreigners do not need a residence permit to buy property in the first place.
  • The Presidency of Migration Management requires the property to be a home and used as one. A home in shared ownership covering family members gives them the right to apply too.
  • A short-term permit is issued for up to two years at a time. An extension can be requested within 60 days before expiry, and never after it.
  • A permit can be refused or not renewed if its conditions no longer apply, or after a breach of the rules on time spent outside Türkiye.
  • Invest in Türkiye notes that a long-term residence permit is available after eight years of uninterrupted residence.

What BRIDGES adds from practice

BRIDGES works with a property valuation of at least $200,000 for this route, measured by a licensed valuer’s report, not the contract price. It gives two to three months from the purchase to the card, warns that some districts are closed to registration of foreigners’ residence, and notes that selling the property means the permit is reconsidered. BRIDGES also reminds clients that the permit alone does not make you a Turkish tax resident, while rental income from a Turkish property is taxed in Türkiye in any case. Its case about a client who opened accounts at Ziraat Bank without a frozen deposit shows how a property can support both a residence permit and a banking relationship.

Residence permit or citizenship?

A residence permit leads to citizenship only through ordinary naturalisation, which under Article 11 requires five years of uninterrupted residence, sufficient Turkish and other conditions. If a passport is the goal, the investment route is the one designed for it. If you only need to live in Türkiye legally for now, a residence permit is cheaper and simpler. BRIDGES describes the permit route on its page about residency in Turkey through a home.

For the investment route itself, start with the complete guide. Last checked 18 October 2026.

Questions and answers

Can I travel to Europe visa-free with a Turkish passport?

No. Turkish citizens need a Schengen visa. Since 15 July 2025 the EU applies a cascade: after two visas used correctly within three years, a one-year multiple-entry visa can be issued, then three-year and five-year visas.

Do I have to give up my current citizenship?

Türkiye does not ask investors to renounce their citizenship, and BRIDGES confirms that dual citizenship is allowed. The Citizenship Law recognises multiple citizenship and provides for it to be noted in the civil records. Whether your other country allows it is a question for its own law.

Is a Turkish residence permit through property a step to citizenship?

Not automatically. As a general rule, ordinary naturalisation requires five years of uninterrupted residence, sufficient Turkish and other conditions under Article 11 of the Citizenship Law. The fast route is the separate citizenship by investment programme.
